I wanted to sketch something. Lately I’ve been thinking about classical sculpture, and how the old masters would sculpt in a way that highlighted form. It seems like we, in the modern era, tend to gravitate toward the geometric instead of embracing the organic. Perhaps subconsciously I was feeling overwhelmed with the artificial, and wanted a return to the natural.
Instead of trying too hard for a likeness with this study, I wanted to really discern the form of the objects. The first few I drew from sculptures, and I noted how the blank eyes kept focus on the forms. Often, a portrait artist will put a lot of effort and time in the eyes to engage the viewer, and since I was attempting to study the overall form, I left the eyes blank on the sketches from real people. I also limited myself to a time limit of under an hour. These few were the most enjoyable to draw.
